Description
Upper Terrace hot springs at Mammoth in Yellowstone National Park. Heat, water, limestone and rock fractures all combine to create the unique formations in Mammoth Hot Springs. The main mineral that deposited is called travertine and tends to be white. But the living microorganisms and bacteria create various shades of pink, yellow, orange, green and brown. This specific area is in the upper terrace loop. A section of the Terrace has a boardwalk that links several of the features. This boardwalk leads to trail springs where on this cold morning the sun is slowly starting to rise lighting up the path and welcoming visitors. Steam rises from trail springs and Dryad springs which is located down the terrace.

Superb lighting. This goes far beyond the typical shots of Mammoth that one usually sees. Great mood, with the contrasting cool colors of the rock and the warm colors of the boardwalk and sky. VF

Thank you for you kind words. It isn't always easy to find something unique and photograph it in these areas. I was blessed by a nice sunrise and I took a chance. Thanks again!
