Description
Orange Spring Mound doesn't sound like the most creative name for a thermal feature, but after learning a little more, it makes perfect sense. This Hot spring is located on the upper terrace drive of the Mammoth Hot Springs Area. Water flows from several vents in this 48 foot tall feature. Thermophiles living in the water create the striking colors of this hot spring. The average temperature of Orange Spring Mound is 157 degrees fahrenheit, which is cooler than most of the hot springs in the Mammoth area. This cooler temperature allows orange colored cyanobactieria to dominate. The brilliant colors of this hot spring change through the seasons due to water flow and amount of available sunlight. Not only is Yellowstone National Park very unique for the contents within the park but each feature is different from another.
