Description
This is a vintage Bird's eye view of the city of Cheney,Washington Territory, county seat of Spokane County 1884. Originally created by a company out of Wisconsin that traveled through the state of Washington in the late 19th century. The maps were not drawn to scale or created for reference but more for promotional and development of the area. Because of this, there is some concern by historians that the maps are not completely accurate or truthful. Cheney was the original county seat of Spokane County. Under a highly disputed vote between Cheney and Spokane Falls(later changed to just Spokane), Spokane Falls was given the county seat even though Cheney received the majority of votes. After a demand for a recount that never happened the citizens of Cheney took matters into their own hands. Under the cover of darkness, a group of armed "Cheneyietes" invaded the auditors office taking possession of the ballots and doing their own recount which proved they won the county seat and later confirmed by the auditor and a in court. But in 1886, another election for county seat was held and Spokane won and has retained the county seat ever since. It needs to also be noted that this map was created while Washington was still just a territory. Washington officially became a state in 1889.
This map is a copy of the original that is stored in the Library of Congress. It has been digitally enhanced for printing while still keeping the original integrity of the drawing.
