Description
Dr. Ray Vaughn Pierce, was a "snake oil quack" from Buffalo NY. where he manufactured his own tonics that he claimed cured various medical ailments. Also known as “The Prince of Quacks” and the “Emperor of Elixir”, Dr. Pierce became one of the most successful snake oil salesman of the 19th century. A couple of his most popular tonics was a cure-all called "Golden Medical Discovery" and his favorite prescription for "weak women". One of the main places where his tonics were sold was during traveling shows. When there was a break, a salesman would talk to the audience. A plant in the crowd would stand up and explain how the tonic helped them to convince everyone and encourage them to buy it. Another way Dr. Pierce and other quacks would sell their remedies was to advertise on buildings in cities and barns in the rural areas. This barn, located just off a highway in Washington State is just one barn in the area that sill has Dr. Pierce's advertisement.
